Different leaders have praised former Bank of Uganda governor Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile for his contribution to the development of Uganda.

The tributes were paid during the first memorial service to celebrate the legacy of Mutebile at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero in Kampala today.

Industry state minister David Bahati praised Mutebile for initiating and sponsoring the historic visit that the king of Toro, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru, made to Kigezi in 2019.

Bahati said the visit of the monarch helped to cement ties and acceptability for the thousands of the Bakiga that continue to migrate to Toro for settlement.

"Mutebile believed in a free market economy and this belief saw a stable monetary policy that kept the inflation at a single digit level for many years: A record that is unmatched in the management of any monetary policy in the whole world," Bahati said.

Prime Minister Emeritus Amama Mbabazi praised the late Mutebile for being at the helm of numerous interventions that lifted the economy of Uganda from the commodity scarcities, inflation, and instabilities of the 1970s.

BOU deputy governor Dr. Micheal AtingI-Ego said Mutebile was a Rotarian with a generous heart and improved the relevance and social standing of the Bank by constructing and equipping health centers in the districts of Kabale and Rubanda.

Kampala Rotary Club president Prof. Francis Omaswa described Mutebile as a person who was generous, kind, a visionary leader, and who supported many initiates in the Rotary Club.

Dr. Ben Mbonye said that Mutebile was a person of integrity and high respect, who committed his whole life to supporting and serving the people of Uganda.

Ms. Betty Mutebile described the deceased, as loving, friendly and hardworking, who devoted his entire life to his job and serving God.

Mutebile served as BOU governor and chairperson board of directors of the Bank of Uganda from 2001 till his demise in 2022.
