Kumi district local government has officially launched a campaign aimed at eliminating open defecation in the community.
The announcement was made on Monday during the belated World Water Day celebrations held at Olimai Primary School in Kanyum sub-county.
Sr. Susan Okwakol, the assistant district health officer in charge of child and maternal health, highlighted a critical issue, stating that 75 percent of diseases, such as coughs and diarrhoea, are caused by poor hygiene practices at home.
Moses Oonyu, the assistant district health officer for environmental health, said the district intends to enforce existing bylaws, especially in households without pit latrines and handwashing facilities.
He noted that progress in this area has been slower than anticipated.
Village sanitation health committee members told Etop Radio that the bylaws should be leveraged to encourage residents to construct latrines instead of using the bush.
John Calvin Olinga who recently donated handwashing facilities to local schools, emphasised the importance of prioritising children’s health.
