Kyambogo University mourns student killed in boda boda crash

Kyambogo University is mourning the death of Anita Scovia Cherotich, a 21-year-old second-year Bachelor of Environmental Science Technology and Management student, who died in a crash while travelling on a boda boda in Bweyogerere on Monday, March 30, 2026.
According to an official statement from the university’s Student Welfare Department, Cherotich, who was attached to Nanziri Hall, was struck by a speeding vehicle at Fuelex in Bweyogerere town at around 1:30 pm. She died instantly from blunt force trauma, as confirmed by a postmortem report.
Police transported her body to Mulago City Mortuary, and the university assisted her family under its student burial policy.
The body was handed over to her relatives the same day at 7 pm. Cherotich will be laid to rest in Rotok village, Kiserem subcounty, Kapchorwa district.
The university has called on the community to support the bereaved family during this difficult time.
Earlier, the Uganda Police issued a public appeal to help identify the student.
"The bearer of this Kyambogo University ID, identified as Cherotich Anita Scovia, was involved in a fatal road crash in Bweyogerere. She was travelling on a boda boda that collided with a moving vehicle, resulting in her immediate death. Her body has been taken to Mulago Mortuary, and her family or relatives have not yet been identified or contacted. Anyone who may know her family or relatives is requested to pass on this information," the notice circulated by Traffic Directorate police spokesperson Michael Kananura stated.

Road crashes on the rise
Cherotich’s death comes amid a rising trend in road crashes in Uganda.
The Uganda Police Force’s annual crime report for 2025 indicates that road crashes increased by 3.7%, rising from 25,107 in 2024 to 26,044 last year.

Traffic Police director, AIGP Lawrence Nuwabiine, said that of the 26,044 reported crashes, 4,602 were fatal, resulting in loss of life, while 13,563 were classified as serious and 7,879 as minor.
“The number of deaths rose by 4.7%, from 5,144 in 2024 to 5,383 in 2025, while serious injuries increased by 8.4%, from 17,013 to 18,444,” AIGP Nuwabiine reported.
This means that, on average, 15 people were killed every day in road crashes across Uganda in 2025.
Despite the rise in crashes, Nuwabiine noted that the overall rate of increase has gradually slowed over the past five years.
The police report also highlighted monthly trends, showing the highest number of crashes in December with 2,443 cases and the lowest in June with 1,978 cases. Fatalities followed a similar pattern, peaking in October with 523 deaths and dropping to the lowest in June with 390.
