KAMPALA - National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi has appointed Dr Lina Zedriga as acting party president after "leaving the country for a while to handle important work".

"In my absence, my deputy president, Dr Lina Zedriga, who has just been released from prison, will be acting president," he said.

He announced this in a video he posted on social media platform X on Saturday (March 14).

Zedriga is facing charges of inciting violence in the recent general election.

The State alleges that in the month of December 2025, at various places in northern Uganda, including the districts of Gulu, Amuru, Omoro, and Nwoya, Zedriga incited people to do an act of violence, to wit, attack the supporters of the National Resistance Movement, a political party, an act based on the reason of their political opinion.

In a statement he posted alongside the video, Kyagulanyi said over the next few weeks, he will engage with his friends and allies all over the world before returning to Uganda to continue the push for freedom and democracy.

"For now, let's remain focused and united," he urged his supporters.

He has been in “hiding” since January 15, 2026, when Ugandans went to the polls to elect the President and MPs, came second after President Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni won with 71.65% of the vote, which is close to his highest-ever tally of 74% in the country’s first multiparty election since he captured power in 1986 and ushered in two decades of no-party government.

However, Kyagulanyi continues to claim he won the election and accuses President Museveni and the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, of orchestrating widespread violence and rigging.

"We decided to fight back not only within the country but also internationally," he said in a Friday video.
