Kyabakadde parishioners commemorate late Archbishop Lwanga

Hundreds of Christians and friends of St Charles Lwanga Catholic parish church, Kyabakadde, converged at the church in Kyampisi Sub-county, Mukono district on Easter Monday (April 1, 2024), to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of the death of Archbishop Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, the pioneer Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kasana-Luweero and later Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese who died on April 3, 2021.

The memorial mass at 10:00am was presided over by the parish-priest, Rev Fr Joachim Ssentongo, who spoke highly of Dr Lwanga’s commitment to the wellbeing of the people of Kyabakadde and all Ugandans.

“Our beloved Archbishop loved Kyabakadde. He is the one who enabled us to have this parish. He used to come here and pray with us on Easter Monday. Today we remember him with even greater admiration for his love and commitment to the Church. He loved God with all his heart. He also served him faithfully as a priest and bishop. He always did whatever was in his means to ensure that the people in this area developed,” Ssentongo said.

Fr. Ssentongo later thanked the family of Archbishop Lwanga for maintaining the relationship and goodwill he had for the parish and Kyabakadde area in general.

The MP (Mukono North Constituency), Abdalla Kiwanuka Mulimamayuuni lauded Archbishop Lwanga for his commitment to justice, human rights and genuine democratic governance.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Madam Rose Lukwago announced the establishment of a charitable organization, Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga Foundation, which she said will help to keep alive the deceased Prelate’s legacy, particularly in the arena of education, health care and social development.

Archbishop Lwanga hailed from Kyabakadde, where he did a lot of marvellous things for the people. He started and supported a number of social development programmes, such as Kyampisi Rural Development Programme (KRUDEP). He started St Cyprian High School Kyabakadda. 

He also built St Charles Lwanga Catholic parish church, Kyabakadde, where his memorial mass took place. The students’ choir of St Cyprian High School led the singing during the memorial mass.

The Church has organised another Memorial mass for Archbishop Lwanga at Rubaga Cathedral on Wednesday (April 3, 2024).
