Security operatives in Katakwi district say they are on a high alert to thwart any raids by Karimojong cattle rustlers.
The development follows reports that Karimojong warriors are planning to raid the district including Kapelebyong district during this festive season to raid cattle.
Katakwi LC5 chairperson Geoffrey Omolo made the revelation during the first annual thanksgiving prayers and end-of-the-year party held at the district headquarters on Thursday.
Omollo said the army has been notified to stay alert to respond to any attack by the raiders who want to use the festive season to destabilise the prevailing peace.
At the same prayers, Vice-President Jessica Alupo pledged to support the Katakwi district workers SACCO with sh10m.
This was contained in her message as a chief guest read by Resident District Commissioner Maj. (rtd) Godfrey Katamba who said the money is aimed at helping all the employees access money easily.
Unite for the people
The Rev. Fr. Remey Nyengere, the parish priest of St Stephen Catholic Parish in Katakwi town council, who led the prayers, asked all the civil servants and political leaders in the district to unite and work for the benefit of their people.
He said the leaders should sit down and reflect on the successes and challenges of the projects they had planned to implement in 2023.
Nyengere also urged them to stop pointing fingers and instead told them to turn to the Lord Jesus to help them in the plans of 2024.
The priest blessed the newly built council chambers and prayed for the souls of the departed former employees of the Katakwi district.
The best employees were also awarded certificates of recognition during the same function.
