KAMPALA - Excitement filled the air on Kampala city's Nakasero Hill as the Goat Roast Group from Kampala Club presented two incubators to the staff of Mukono district-based Nkokonjeru Hospital.

The handover ceremony was marked by cheers and applause.

“This enclosed plastic bassinet will help ensure the survival of newborns in Mukono,” said a jubilant former minister, Richard Kaijuka.

“We plan to make this donation an annual tradition. These incubators will keep babies warm and maintain a stable body temperature. Additionally, hospital staff will guide parents in the ‘Kangaroo’ method to promote skin-to-skin contact".

Kaijuka explained that the decision to donate incubators and a phytotherapy machine arose from concerns about overcrowding in existing incubators, where multiple infants were being placed together.

Dr Leonard Okello acknowledged that while the donation is appreciated, it represents just a small step in addressing the numerous challenges faced by the hospital.

“We are often overwhelmed by patients with curable diseases who arrive in advanced stages, particularly with malaria, sexually transmitted infections, and skin conditions,” he said.

Sister Regina Nattongo confirmed the pressing needs, noting that the hospital, which has a capacity of 100 beds, currently has only six available. She also highlighted the troubling patient-to-doctor ratio.

“As we approach the 100th anniversary of the hospital's founding by Mother Kevina and the Little Sisters, we are reminded that belief in witchcraft still prevails in some communities. The Kampala Club’s gesture underscores the significant gaps in our healthcare system. What many take for granted is desperately needed just next door”.

As the Friday (October 25, 2024) evening unfolded, guests savoured fine wines and spirits, accompanied by the enticing aromas of roasting meats.

By 8:00pm, with the moon casting a gentle glow, the donors were seen dancing joyfully, blending traditional moves with breakdance twists and the lively rhythms of Soukous.
