Teachers in Kagadi district have been asked to impart employable skills and knowledge to learners.

Transport state minister Fred Byamukama says the move will ensure unemployment among graduates is reduced.

Minister Byamukama made the call on Thursday while commissioning a multi-million classroom block at Bunyoro College Secondary School which coincided with the World Teacher’s Day celebrations for Kagadi district held at Mabale Primary School.

"I want to urge teachers to modernise their methodology of teaching, by teaching learners’ skills of creating their own jobs rather than book knowledge and cramming concepts of job seeking. Education is no longer an investment, but a choice for parents to help the young generation sustain themselves in the future as well as being useful to the nation," he said.

Robert Semate, the director of Bunyoro Secondary School, thanked the Government for privatisation policy and liberalisation. He, however, decried the challenges private schools face including high taxes, impact of COVID-19, the lack of enough new lower secondary school curriculum books and low enrollment of female students at A'level.

Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) chairperson Kagadi branch Solomon Musinguzi urged the Government to declare World’s Teacher’s Day a public holiday and solve the salary disparities between arts and science teachers, among others.
