Police are investigating a tragic incident in which a 50-year-old electrician, only identified as Gilbert, also known as Engineer, died by electrocution while fixing an electrical socket at a client’s home.

According to Kigezi region Police spokesperson Elly Maate, the incident occurred on November 19, 2025, at about 4:00pm at Karugashe Cell, Butobere ward, Central division in Kabale municipality.

Maate said the deceased, a resident of Bugongi, Southern ward, had been called by Catherine Akahurira, 34, an assistant administrator at Kabale Chief Magistrate’s Court, to repair a socket inside her bedroom.

“Akahurira told Police that she had asked Engineer Gilbert to come over and fix her socket. As he worked, she used the flashlight on her phone to light the area because electricity had gone off,” Maate said.

He added that while the deceased was still working, power was restored and Akahurira alerted him after noticing the bulb had come on.

“Despite the warning, the deceased insisted that he knew what he was doing and continued working since he was used to the job,” Maate explained.

Moments later, Akahurira reportedly saw Gilbert collapse, sit down, and begin urinating on himself while gasping for breath.

When he failed to respond to her calls, she alerted her landlord, who helped rush him to Dr Anguyo’s Clinic, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police at Kabale Central Police Station visited and documented the scene, recorded statements from witnesses, and had a postmortem conducted on the body.

“Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the electrocution are ongoing,” Maate said.
