The education ministry has handed over a new vehicle to Kaabong School of Nursing and Midwifery, which is located in the Karamoja region, to ease travel.
Higher technical and vocational education and training director Dr Jane Egau who presided over the handover ceremony appealed to the school to use it in accordance with the Government regulations.
“Do not allow your driver to load unauthorised passengers and the vehicle shall be subject to annual inspection,” Egau said.
She said the Isuzu double cabin pick-up truck: UG 3019 E, is intended to support the activities of the institution.
School principal Mary Achuma received the all-terrain pick-up truck on behalf of the institution.
The donation comes six months after Achuma was ambushed by armed assailants twice in May and July. She and her driver were viciously shot at both times.
“These attacks are mainly due to famine and the hardship faced by Karimojongs,” Achuma said.
She expressed her gratitude upon receiving the vehicle, but also revealed the several challenges her institution faces that need urgent intervention by the ministry, such as the need for a hostel to accommodate male students at the college.
The handover, which took place at Legacy Towers in Kampala on Tuesday December 6, 2022, was attended by members of the governing council.
Dr Safinah Museene, the commissioner in charge of the health education and training department was also present to witness the handover.
Achuma also decried the insecurity which she said is rampant in the area saying: “We can’t take our children to Kaabong because of insecurity concerns”.
The principal requested the education ministry to build a perimeter wall fence around the school. She also highlighted that the army has so far killed five assailants who recently attempted to force their way in.
