KYANKWANZI - Justice of the Supreme Court Mike Chibita has urged the youth to shun corruption and embrace hard work.
He urged them to avoid taking shortcuts in life, noting that the ideal journey to prosperity should be premised on discipline, good ethics and integrity.
"Work ethic means you put in as much effort as time to produce what you are supposed to do," he said, adding: "Everyone has 24 hours. So, if you wake up at 10:00am, it means you have lost a lot of time".
He was speaking during the annual National Youth Convention at Kyankwanzi on September 24, 2024.
The event brought together 351 youths from all regions of the country and was presided over by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni.
Unlike previous events that have been held in Kampala, this year's conference added patriotism as a core, necessitating attendees to undergo a 10-day training at the National Leadership Institute, Kyankwanzi.
During the course, the youth not only got classroom lessons but also partook in several activities, including self-improvement lessons and gun handling.
"It is not for nothing that when you come here, they take away the clothes you came in and give you a military uniform, " he said, adding that this helps one to have a test of the military way of living.
"If you can learn anything about the military it is the discipline. You must be dressed in a certain way and conduct yourself in a certain way," he said.
Emphasizing the need to embrace honest work and labour, the Supreme Court judge added: "Never try to take something which is not yours; don't dip your hand in somebody else's pocket. Let it not be said about you that everything is perfect except that you dip your hand in somebody else pocket".
