Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has endorsed a partnership with the UK-based Invictus Games Foundation to improve rehabilitation services for wounded UPDF soldiers.

The partnership follows a meeting held at the Chieftaincy of Defence Intelligence and Security headquarters in Mbuya, attended by Invictus representatives David Wiseman and Helen D’Oley.

The meeting was part of a wider visit by the delegation, who earlier met President Yoweri Museveni and defence minister Oboth Oboth to discuss cooperation in using sports as a tool for recovery.

The delegation later toured the UPDF Rehabilitation and Vocational Centre in Mubende district, where they witnessed the resilience of injured servicemen.

During the discussions, Gen. Kainerugaba welcomed Invictus’s mission and pledged the UPDF’s full support in promoting adaptive sports and wellness programmes for injured personnel.

“No institution is allowed to train unless you are licensed and approved by the councils concerned. If you have such a school, my advice to you is to close voluntarily because you are very dangerous,” he said.

A Memorandum of Understanding was subsequently signed between the Ministry of Education and Sports and the Invictus Games Foundation to guide joint activities in sports development and rehabilitation.

The signing was witnessed by sports state minister Peter Ogwang, UPDF Joint Staff - formal education, sports and culture, Brig. Gen. Richard Karemire, and officials from the National Council of Sports and State House.

Invictus Games, founded by Britain’s Prince Harry in 2014, is a global movement that uses sport to support the physical and psychological recovery of injured and sick military personnel.
