By press time, the church had not yet issued a statement over the matter and efforts to speak to the Bishop proved futile as calls to his phone went unanswered.

The Police in Bombo have arrested a driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado vehicle that was on its way to pick up the newly elected Bishop of Luwero Diocese, Rev. Can. Wilson Kisekka, but knocked and killed a boda boda rider.

Sam Twiineamazima, the Savannah Regional Police spokesperson said the driver was arrested as he attempted to flee, shortly after he had reported the incident. He blamed the accident on reckless driving.

“The Territorial traffic police at Bombo has registered a fatal accident today Wednesday, March 20th, 2024, at around 11:20 am at mile 20 Bombo along the Gulu Kampala Highway that claimed the life of one person. The accident involved motor vehicle registration number UBC 611C Land Cruiser Prado and an unknown motorcycle that claimed a life of one identified as Hassan Matovu, a 39-year-old resident of Nakatonya Sedetula Nyimbwa in Luwero district,” Twiineamazima said.

He revealed that preliminary information indicates that the vehicle driven by Kenneth Manyire had a lead Police vehicle.

“Manyire overtook the lead car and went ahead and knocked a boda boda cyclist. The victim was rushed to Bombo General Military Hospital where he shortly passed on. After the accident the driver drove ahead at mile 19 Bombo, parked, and reported the accident but decided to run away,” Twiineamazima added.

He said traffic at the checkpoint with help of the commander of the lead car and crews, chased the driver, arrested him and he was detained at Bombo Police Station as investigations continue.

By press time, the church had not yet issued a statement over the matter and efforts to speak to the Bishop proved futile as calls to his phone went unanswered.

Troubled Luwero Anglican diocese finally got a new bishop on March 6, 2024, after a succession saga that dogged the area since early last year.

The House of Bishops sitting at Lweza Training and Conference Centre in Wakiso district elected Rev. Can. Kisekka as the fourth Bishop of Luwero Diocese.

The 53-year-old Kisekka replaced, Bishop Emeritus Eldard Nsubuga who abdicated in July last year after clocking the mandatory age of 65.

Kisekka was selected from three candidates who were vetted by the Luwero diocesan nomination committee.

The other two candidates were the Rev. Abraham Muyinda, the vicar of St Paul Cathedral of Namirembe Diocese, and the Rev. Festo Kalungi, who is serving at Kira Parish in Namirembe Diocese.

Second election in a year

It was the second time since April last year that the House of Bishops sat to elect a bishop for the diocese. The first time was in April last year when the same House of Bishops elected Can. Godfrey Kasana Semakula whose election was later revoked following a petition that accused him of having sired children outside marriage.

Kasana, who denies the accusation, says he was denied a chance to defend himself thrice.

Following Kasana's election nullification, Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba appointed retired Mukono Bishop James Sebaggala to act as caretaker bishop of the diocese for eight months which are ending in two weeks.

Kasana's election nullification, however, sparked off protests from sympathetic Christians who last year took to the streets and dragged Archbishop Kaziimba to court, demanding the reversal of Kasana's election nullification decision.

The case was, however, thrown out by Principal Judge Flavian Zeija who ruled that Kaziimba was not the right party to sue.

This prompted Kasana's sympathisers to file a fresh case where they are suing the entire House of Bishops, including Kaziimba.
