JINJA - Hundreds of Muslim faithful braved the Friday morning cold after a night of rain to attend Eid al-Fitr prayers at Bugembe Stadium in Jinja city.

Sheikh Hatim Norman Wamala led the prayers.

He was critical of Muslims who secure loans with accrued interest, yet this is against Islamic teachings.

Religious practice forbids riba, even at low-interest rates, as both illegal and unethical.

In Islamic finance, riba refers to interest charged on loans or deposits.

“We all know that the Islamic teachings prohibit us from borrowing money that comes with interest. Let us follow our customs because this is cheating,” said Wamala.

He also encouraged followers to maintain the good discipline exhibited during the holy month of Ramadhan by, for instance, regularly reading the Quran.

Wamala challenged those who are able to continue providing for the needy, orphans and widows even after Ramadhan.
