Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has told Parliament that she will not run the House based on social media rumours.

Asked to respond to recent social media allegations against Parliament, Among said. “You need answers? I will give you the answers…” Among charged.

“I will never and I'm saying, I will never give you an answer on matters of hearsay, on rumormongering. I am not going to run this House on rumormongering. Me, to answer you on hearsay, on things that you have cooked on social media because I have said no to homosexuality? I will not,” Among said.

This was after Leader of Oppostion Joel Ssenyonyi and Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo demanded for answers against the allegations of corruption, misuse of funds and irregular recruitment raised on social media.

Among, however, said the Parliamentary Commission will meet and discuss the allegations and report back.

“The Leader of Opposition wrote to me and I replied that we shall have a Commission meeting and discuss these issues and come up with a solution and we shall report back on the findings from the meetings,” she said.

During plenary MP Ssenyonyi demanded a comprehensive explanation from the Speaker about the corruption allegations currently on social media against Parliament.

In his submission, Ssenyonyi first outlined the mission of Parliament saying that as a people-centred House, there was a need for accountability achieved through representation, democracy and good governance.

“For the last three weeks, the people of Uganda have been raising several questions of how funds are being used or misused, recruitment, accountability and so on but Parliament has not come out comprehensively to explain or talk about these issues," he said before Jesca Ababiku (Women District Representative Adjumani) rose on a procedural matter and demanded to know whether it was right for Parliament to debate media reports rather than issues that are officially presented in Parliament.

Early this week, Ssenyonyi wrote to the Commission asking Speaker Among to convene a Parliamentary Commission meeting to offer an explanation on the various corruption allegations labeled against Parliament.

Ssenyonyi said the move was part of the resolutions of the shadow cabinet meeting that was held on Monday at Parliament to discuss the way forward for the numerous allegations that have been labeled against the institutions, particularly the Office of the Speaker

“As opposition Cabinet, we have written to the chairperson of the Parliamentary Commission (Speaker) to convene an urgent meeting to explain the various allegations that have been labeled against the institution of parliament, particularly her office.

We also demand that an explanation be given to the public on the floor of Parliament because we as leaders need to be accountable,” Ssenyonyi said during a press conference held at Parliament on Monday.

During plenary, MP Ssekikubo protested insisting that the Speaker responds to the allegations since they had tarnished the name of the institution.

“Other matters can wait. This House has been engulfed in totally unprecedented reports of abuse. How can we debate other things when the credibility of Parliament is under challenge and nobody has come out to give an explanation. I am surprised that you did not even mention anything in your communication. We need answers of what happened,” Ssekikubo said.
