The Hoima-Kampala Road remains closed after the river Kafu floods destroyed the road rendering it impassable.

On Thursday evening Hoima police beefed up security at Kataraiga in Buhanika sub-county where the road has been destroyed as the water volumes reduced.

Police has stopped motorists from using the dilapidated road until when Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) completes the repairs.

“We should not put lives at risk, we want to appreciate the communities, leaders for cooperating with us, but we are also in contact with line ministry and departments who confirmed that once the waters reduce, they will be able to measure the extent of damage and advise the road users accordingly,” said the Albertine region police spokesperson, Alan Hakiza.

Geoferry Businge, a resident of Kataraiga said victims of the floods include students from Kyankwanzi who study in Hoima.

“The road is in a very bad condition and some of the parts have been collapsing. We can't risk the lives of the children because the river might flood again and they drown,” he said.

Allan Ssempebwa the UNRA spokesperson advises that the travelers should continue using the alternative routes through Buhimba, Nalweyo, Gayaza Kakumiro then Mubende to Kampala or Hoima Masindi Luweero to Kampala.

Francis Mugisa a resident of Buhanika said that he had lost six acres of coffee due to the floods which ravaged the area.

“The losses we have encountered are very huge, many of the farmers are struggling because of the floods and we appeal to the disaster ministry to come on ground and assess the damage and help us with relief food,” he said.
