Youth leaders in greater Bushenyi region are eager to welcome President Yoweri Museveni, who is set to visit the region this week as part of the Parish Development Model (PDM) assessment tour.
PDM is a government initiative aimed at promoting economic development and improving livelihoods at the parish level.
During a media briefing at Tuzza Hotel in Bushenyi town on February 23, 2025, in preparation for the president's visit, the youth in Greater Bushenyi expressed their enthusiasm and expectations.
"We are thrilled to host the President's visit to our region. We believe that PDM has the potential to bring about change and improvement in people's lives," Baryamujura Ibra, one of the youth leaders, said.
He added that they have actively engaged in PDM processes, including training to build their skills and knowledge in areas such as agriculture, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
The President's visit to the Ankole region, which is expected to start on February 25, is expected to include several activities, such as meeting with local leaders, PDM beneficiaries from Ibanda and Rubirizi districts.
The President is also expected to open a skilling hub in Kashari Mbarara district and a public rally where he is expected to address the community in Mwizi sub-county in Rwampara district, where youth leaders have to participate in these activities and to showcase their skills and achievements.
Unfulfilled promises
On top of their agenda are the long-waited road developments, specifically the Kabwohe-Masheruka-Nyakambu-Bwizibwera-Nsiika (49Km) road and Mbarara-Ishaka road rehabilitation, which they say are crucial for the region's economic growth as they will facilitate easier transportation of goods and people.
The youth are also seeking significant investments in health care and education. They are asking the president to upgrade Kitagata Hospital to a regional referral hospital status and increase its funding, which would provide better medical care services to the community. They also request for the establishment of a skilling hub, which would equip them with skills to compete in the job market.
The youth also advocated for the tarmacking of the Kabwohe-Kitagata-kabira Rukungiri road, which would not only improve transportation but also boost trade between neighbouring districts.
Meanwhile, Kasigazi William Donanto, the Bushenyi district deputy resident commissioner, emphasized the importance of showing up in big numbers to support the president's efforts to bring about positive change in the region.
"I encourage everyone to be part of this historic event to showcase your community and to demonstrate their enthusiasm for PDM initiative," Kasigazi said.
