In response to a strike by traders in Kampala central business district, the Police have announced increased deployment in the city.

The move, Police say, is aimed at maintaining law and order and safeguarding national facilities.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire on April 8, 2024, said the security measures are aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens and critical infrastructure within the city.

Owoyesigyire reported that two individuals have been detained after they set tyres ablaze on Nabugabo Road as part of the ongoing protest.

Earlier, traders had announced a peaceful demonstration. How the two suspects came up with the tyres remains a subject of investigation, according to Owoyesigyire.

"Detectives are interviewing the suspects as authorities work to assess and address the situation," Owoyesigyire said.

These developments were highlighted during a media briefing at the Police headquarters in Naguru, Nakawa Division, Kampala, on Monday.

"The heightened Police presence is to manage the strike and ensure public safety amidst the ongoing tensions," he said.
