Heavy security deployment at annual UMA trade fair in Kampala

Heavy police deployment has been mounted around the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) International Trade Fair grounds in Lugogo, Kampala, with multiple security layers designed to deter crime and ensure safety for thousands of exhibitors and visitors.

According to a police report seen by New Vision online on Tuesday (October 7), the operation began Friday morning, with several 999 patrol cars stationed along access routes to enforce perimeter and outside-ring security.

“So far, so good,” the Police said, although as confirming a few petty theft incidents, mainly targeting women’s handbags, mobile phones, and wallets.

Law enforcement sources revealed that the deployment is part of a broader, technology-driven surveillance system now active across key public events.

High-definition long-range cameras have been installed at strategic points to provide real-time monitoring of crowd movements, helping officers preempt and respond swiftly to any security threat.

The footage is being coordinated through regional command centres, including the Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, where officers maintain live feeds from multiple surveillance points across Kampala.

Police have also increased foot patrols, especially in crowded zones near the trade fair and surrounding roads, to back up ground officers and provide rapid support where needed.

Officials said the heightened vigilance will remain in place throughout the event, which draws both local and international exhibitors. 

“The multi-layered operation ensures full situational awareness. We want to maintain a peaceful and secure environment for everyone," an officer said.
