A heavy downpour on April 17, 2024, claimed the life of a toddler and left several residents of Nanso B village in Nyenga division, Buikwe district, homeless.

Edisa Nakayenze, 60, one of the affected residents, said the downpour began at midnight as they were preparing to go to bed.

Edisa said at the time of the downpour, there were three people in their house and that when the roof was blown off, they sought refuge in their neighbor's house, for the rest of the night. She added that the winds also destroyed their house, destroying most of their property.

Sharif Kitambula, a resident, said the storm claimed the life of one-year-old Jasmine Munafu after debris from the house where she was with her parents fell on her.

Village chairperson Moses Onsonga told New Vision Online that he recorded 22 houses in his village affected by the rains. These houses currently lack rooftops, and some were destroyed.

According to Onsonga, the rains also ravaged their crops and plantations. He expressed deep concern over the lack of shelter for the residents affected by the disaster.

Pastor Moses Bbamu Waiswa, the Nyenga division chairperson, voiced concerns about the impending hunger that the affected residents are likely to endure, as most of their crops were washed away by the heavy rain.

Buikwe district chairperson Jimmy Kanaabi urged the Government to decentralise funds for disaster preparedness to the district level.

According to him, this will ease service delivery and rescue the affected people in time. He also appealed to the Prime Minister's Office to provide roofing materials to the affected residents.
