Police in the Kyoga East region on Monday, February 19, arrested the headmaster of Kagwara Seed School in Serere District over the alleged theft of 15 computers bought by the government to aid ICT in education.

Police also arrested the director of studies who is currently being detained at the regional Police offices in Soroti city.

Serere District Police Commander Saulo Musasizi declined to comment on the matter, referring requests to the region headquarters in Soroti who he said conducted the arrest.

The acting Police spokesperson for the Elgon region, Robert Tukei, confirmed the arrest but declined to reveal the details on the grounds that the Police were still gathering more details before briefing the press.

“We have five suspects in our custody, but we can’t disclose to you their particulars as that might jeopardise our investigations,” Tukei told New Vision.

According to him, the school lost 21 computers that the learners were using for studies.

However, the area district councillor, Emmanuel Opio, revealed that the computers were discovered missing in January this year after a laboratory window was found vandalised.

“The watchman disappeared since then and the hunt was mounted until last week when he was arrested in Kampala. It was upon his arrest that Police went and arrested the school headmaster and the director of studies together with four other community youth,” Opio said.

He explained the headmaster and his director of studies were picked by the Police on Monday evening.

“It’s disappointing to us the parents that our children are missing getting computer skills, yet the government has sent us brand new computers,” Opio said.

However, Tukei promised that the Police would address the media tomorrow, Wednesday, over the matter.
