Authorities at Gulu University have disclosed that Kotido campus in Karamoja sub-region will be operational by August 2024.

The Campus will be housed at the former Kotido Primary Teachers’ College-PTC which was among the 22 Primary Teachers Institutions in the country that were phased out as part of the official transition from Grade III and Grade V teaching qualifications in favour of the acquisition of a Bachelor's Degree in Education for all teachers.

According to James Onono Ojok, the Gulu University Public Relations Officer, this academic year, the Kotido University campus will offer the following courses: Bachelor in Public Administration and Bachelor of Education (Primary) under the Direct, Diploma, Graduate and Higher Education Access Certificate Entry Schemes.

He encouraged all teachers to take up the initiative to upgrade, saying Gulu University is non-residential even the Kotido campus will open on a similar status.

“We shall only ensure our students in the surrounding hostels are well catered for and even in the places where they rent,” Ojok stated adding that "the university will take the responsibility to understand their locations for safety."

He added that there will be no change of leadership, specifically the staff will remain but be answerable to Gulu University.

“If they were answering directly to the Education Ministry but a new direction is in place,” Ojok stated.

He further said the university located in Losilang Parish, Kotido sub-county is already receiving applications that can be accessed on their website, adding that a team from Gulu University will be in Karamoja region to sensitize the public in mid-April.

While addressing councillors during the handing over of Kotido PTC infrastructure to Gulu University authorities in February 2023, Dr Sidonia Angom, the chairperson of task force Gulu University constituent college-Moroto, said the Kotido campus was projected to benefit about 1,427 Grade 3 teachers spread across Karamoja sub-region and the neighbouring Teso, Lango and Acholi regions.

So far, Kyambogo University has also benefited from the famous Moroto Core Primary Teachers College now known as Moroto Teacher Training Institute.
