A renowned Gulu-based music promoter received a harsh beating on April 26, 2025, after falsely claiming his mother had died in order to solicit condolence money from friends.

Geoffrey Opiyo, 28, also known as Sammy G, a resident of Laroo–Pece Division in Gulu city, broke the false news of the death of his mother, Margret Alobo, 58, on April 12, 2025, at around 9pm.

He informed friends and their wider circles that his mother had died at St Mary’s Hospital Lacor, after a long illness.

To bolster his claim, Opiyo created a WhatsApp group, which attracted 142 members who raised over sh1 million to support him and his family during the "purported" time of mourning.

However, Opiyo’s deceit unravelled when one of his friends decided to personally visit the family home to deliver his condolence money.

Upon arrival, the friend was met by Opiyo’s elder brother, William Rackara, who was shocked to learn of the fake death announcement.

Rackara immediately informed the rest of the family, including their mother, who was alive and in good health.

Together, they launched a manhunt for Opiyo, leading to his apprehension and subsequent beating and caution.

Despite being caught, Opiyo persisted in soliciting condolence money from friends who were unaware that his mother was still alive.

His scheme finally collapsed on Saturday when his friends tricked him into meeting them at a popular hangout in Gulu city, where he was caned more than a dozen times.

In the dramatic confrontation, Opiyo admitted to his wrongdoing and promised not to repeat the offence.

His brother Rackara revealed that Opiyo has been ordered to surrender the collected money to their clan, which will decide its fate. Their mother is also expected to undergo a cleansing ritual.
