The Police have arrested a driver of Kagadi District Local Government who allegedly knocked one of the area residents demonstrating over the poor state of Muhorro-Ndaiga road yesterday, Monday.

Julius Hakiiza, the Albertine regional police spokesman, told New Vision on Tuesday, February 27, that Steven Tibihikira will be charged with reckless driving.

"He drove carelessly and ended up causing the death of one of the demonstrators identified as Magezi Tuhaise (aged 25). He continued driving after getting involved in an incident," he said.

Hakiiza confirmed that Tibihikira is a driver of Kagadi District Local Government but this time round he was driving the district LC5 chairperson, Yosia Ndibwama in a vehicle attached to the district health office.

"We have been looking for him and he has just been arrested and the vehicle impounded by the Kagadi Police," he said.

It is alleged that Tibihikira hit and fatally injured Magezi, who was later pronounced dead.

Hakiiza also said 12 people suspected to be the ringleaders of the protest were taken into Police custody and will be charged with unlawful assembly and inciting violence.

"They said they were demanding for rehabilitation of their road which was destroyed by rain and that the government has not bothered to work on it but the demonstration was illegal because we were not notified about it," he said.

He said the district chairperson is not facing any charges because he was an occupant, but he will just record a statement.
