Police say they have in their custody gang rape suspects among the 137 individuals arrested in different parts of Kampala city.
The arrests follow joint security forces' intensified operations targeting criminal elements, according to a Police statement released on February 24, 2026.
Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said Police under Kira Road Division, Kira Division and Mukono conducted a series of operations in the areas of Kamwokya, Kyanja, Kisaasi, Kitikifumba Shimoni, Kira Taxi Park, Mbalwa–Namugongo, and Wantoni in Mukono District.
"The operations targeted criminal gangs involved in waylaying and robbing members of the public, smoking suspected narcotics in identified black spots, and committing related offences," Owoyesigyire said.

He revealed that a total of 28 suspects were arrested, among whom are those linked to a gang rape case in Mbalwa.
"Police recovered several exhibits, including suspected narcotics, suspected stolen mobile phones, sharp objects believed to have been used in robberies, and a computer allegedly used to crack phone passwords," he added.
Owoyesigyire also explained that KMP South had conducted co-ordinated disruptive operations on Monday Fberuary 23rd, and wee hours of February 24, in the areas of Mukwano Roundabout, Railway Line and 6th Street under Kabalagala Police Division; Zana Parish in Makindye-Ssabagabo Division under Katwe Police Division; Valley Zone in Salaama; and Nakasozi, Kimbejja, Magwa-Mpangala, Kisozi, Nakiragala, Nagalabi and Sumba under Nsangi Police Division.
"The operations targeted identified crime hotspots, criminal planning points and locations associated with narcotics abuse, mugging, simple robberies and motor," he stated.
Owoyesigyire said a total of 109 suspects were arrested across the divisions and are currently in custody pending screening and court proceedings. Several motorcycles and number plates suspected to be linked to theft were also recovered.
"KMP South remains committed to sustaining such operations to further reduce criminality and enhance public safety within the metropolitan area," he said.
Owoyesigyire said all suspects are currently detained at the respective Police stations pending completion of investigations and prosecution.
He said Police will continue conducting operations in the affected areas to curb criminality and maintain the safety of the public.
Over 1,000 arrested
While addressing the media on February 23, 2027, Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said, "between February 16 and 22, 2026, security agencies conducted intensive, intelligence‑led operations across Kampala Metropolitan and upcountry regions, resulting in the arrest of 1,095 suspects linked to burglary, aggravated robbery, narcotics, street mugging and other crimes."
He said, "The operations targeted blackspots, criminal hideouts and narcotics hubs, and led to the recovery of dangerous weapons and other exhibits, while also rescuing victims and responding to emergency calls from the public."
The arrests come in the wake of increased crimes in and around Kampala, leading to a public outcry.
