Galaxy FM chief executive officer and co-founder, Pius Kamugisha, has perished in an accident on the Entebbe Expressway.

Traffic and Safety Directorate spokesperson, Faridah Nampiima, said in a statement that Kamugisha died as he was being rushed to the hospital.

"The territorial Traffic Police at Kajjansi have registered a fatal accident at Nakigala on the expressway. The accident happened on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at about 10:00 pm," Nampiima said.

She said the accident involved a Toyota Hilux registration number UG 0382D, which was being driven by Lt Col Ephraim Byaruhanga, the Intelligence Officer 1st Division Kakiri, and a black Mercedes Benz SUV registration number UBK 320P, driven by Kamugisha.

“It is alleged that both drivers were heading to Busega via the Expressway and towards Nakigalala at kilometre 10, the driver of UBK 320P who was speeding decided to overtake the pickup, which was in the outer lane at a short distance. In the process, he knocked MV UG 0382D on the rear light on the driver’s side, continued by scratching the driver’s door, and then hit off the side mirror,” Nampiima added.

She said Kamugisha lost control and knocked the middle concrete barrier, the vehicle crossed back to the outer lane, rolled into a trench then overturned several times up to a resting position approximately 600 metres from the point of impact.

“The driver sustained serious head injuries and arm fracture by observation. He died on the way as he was being rushed to Mulago Hospital. The cause of the accident has been attributed to reckless driving and drunk driving (as some bottles of alcohol were recovered from the vehicle of the deceased) The body of the deceased was conveyed to Mulago mortuary,” Nampiima said

She said more inquiries about the accident were ongoing.

Police scolded

Several people mourned Kamugisha while others questioned the Police for claiming the deceased was drunk just because bottles of alcohol were found in the car.

“There's more to this story. Finding bottles of alcohol in his car did not mean he was drinking and more so drunk. What if people who know Pius can come out and say he never drank alcohol? Which is very possible,” Jannette Mugisha said.

“Police is becoming judgmental on spot before even completing investigations. What type of bottles were found in the car? soda, beers, whiskey? Professionalism!” Patrick Turya said.

“How does finding bottles in a car mean someone was drunk? And why don't you (Police) upgrade to coming on scene with doctors and nurses than rushing the struggling person to Mulago? How about people first get first aid from nearest health facilities than having them die prematurely along long distances to Mulago. Does Mulago perform miracles?” Jelder Atwooki asked.
