Four people were on Saturday, April 13, 2024, confirmed dead and two others injured following a crash involving two vehicles on Entebbe Road.

The victims — all students of Buganda Royal Institute — were heading to Katomi Beach for a party in Garuga when their vehicle crashed into a lorry while reportedly trying to overtake another vehicle.

The accident happened at around 3:30 pm and involved a Toyota Rumion registration number UBH 582S and a Fuso truck.

Michael Kananura, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson, said the students' vehicle rammed into the Fuso truck which was parked aside offloading sodas after its driver lost control of the vehicle.

He said the injured were promptly transported to Kisubi Hospital for urgent medical attention while the dead were taken to Mulago Hospital mortuary.

"Inquiries into the cause have commenced,” he said.

By press time, the wreckages of the vehicles had been transported to Kisubi Police Station.

Uganda recorded a 30 percent increase in road fatalities registered with the police in 2023, with 4,179 lives lost, according to the 2023 Annual Traffic and Safety Report.

The figures for serious crashes increased to 12,487 in 2023 from 8,860 in 2022.
