Fort Portal hospital medic among five killed in Kisoro crash

Maate attributed the cause of the crash to speeding and suspected break failure on the side of the fuel tanker with registration number KCH 014K/ZF5477.

The motor vehicles and motorcycles were taken to Kisoro Central Police Station pending inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles.

Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital principal anesthetic officer Mathias Dusabimana, 50, is among five people killed in a Kisoro motor crash.

The Tuesday, March 19, 2024, crash involved a Subaru car, a trailer, and a motorcycle in Kisoro district.

Kigezi Police regional spokesperson Elly Maate identified the other dead crash victims as Junior Byaruhanga, 22, a resident of Kanaba sub-county in Kisoro who was riding a motorcycle; Erisa Niyonzima, 56, a resident of Gisasa village, Kanaba sub-county who was a passenger on the motorcycle.

Others were Federensi Byakusenge, 22, a resident of Gikoro village, Nyakabande sub-county in Kisoro, a passenger in the Subaru car registration number UBM 445A and the driver of the Kenyan registered truck who had not yet been identified by press time.

He attributed the cause of the crash to speeding and suspected break failure on the side of the fuel tanker with registration number KCH 014K/ZF5477.

“It's alleged that both the motorcycle and Subaru Forester were coming from Kabale district side heading to Kisoro side and the motorcycle was in front of the Subaru Forester and on reaching the airport junction at Kisoro Airland Hotel, met an oncoming fuel tanker of Kenyan registration that was empty, and speeding. 

The driver lost control of the truck at the corner veered into another lane knocked the motorcycle and pushed it towards the Subaru Forester killing the two people on the motorcycle on sport and injuring both occupants in the Subaru Forester. 

The passenger in the Subaru Forester died at Mutolere Hospital as she was getting treatment, according to the Police report.

Maate said the scene was visited by Police, a sketch map was drawn and the victims were rushed to Mutolere hospital, while the bodies of the deceased persons were taken to Kisoro hospital mortuary for postmortem.
