The former Member of Parliament of Erute North county (Lira district), Charles Angiro Gutomoi, was killed in a car crash Saturday morning, his clan brother has confirmed.

His clan brother and Otuke county MP Paul Omara confirmed the news of Angiro's death in a social media post.

The crash happened in Olwiyo along the Nwoya-Pakwach highway in Nwoya district within Murchison Falls National Park.

It was around 5am on Saturday.

Omara said Angiro was travelling to Nebbi district for a marriage function, adding that “Police is still managing the accident scene".

It is not yet known what exactly happened.

The fate of the other occupants of the vehicle (UAW 943A), including the driver, was not immediately confirmed.

Angiro was a chief of Onywalipyeda clan in Lango chiefdom.

Another family member revealed that Angiro was travelling to Nebbi to preside over a traditional marriage ceremony of Emmanuel Opio, a son of Rev. Sam Isaac Erik.

Efforts to get a comment from the Regional Police spokesperson of Aswa River Region, David Ongom Mudong, were futile by the time of writing this, as his known contacts were unavailable.

In 2018, while serving in the 10th Parliament, Angiro was involved in a car crash at Karuma, during which he sustained serious injuries and later recovered after being treated at Mulago Hospital.

Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa tweeted that he was saddened by the news of Angiro's death.

"I am told they were travelling in a Noah, which overturned..," he said.

"In the August House, Gutomoi was known for his passion on issues of education, health and rural development, among others.

"My condolences go out to the families of the victims of this fatal accident".
