Foodies lick lips at Kayunga food festival

Guests who attended the food festival at Kaynela Farms in Kayunga district from December 1 to 3, 2023, found themselves belching in satiety after indulging in a diverse array of well-prepared dishes.

The event showcased a dynamic fusion of music, games, and agricultural wonders, enchanting attendees amid the scenic backdrop of the farm, where many relished various cuisines prepared in distinct styles.

Each day kicked off with an enlightening farm tour, providing insights into the complexities of managing an extensive agricultural enterprise.

Attendees gained a firsthand look at expansive fruit and vegetable gardens, fish ponds, chicken coops, and even a stable with horses, offering a glimpse into the farm's operations.

Bird enthusiasts were treated to a birdwatching experience, courtesy of the Avian Conservation Uganda Society and Kaynela Farms, which educated visitors on diverse bird species and emphasised the importance of bird conservation.

After the farm exploration, the culinary journey featured authentic dishes from different regions of Uganda, such as Acholi, Bugisu, Busoga, Buganda, Kigezi, and Ankole cuisines each preparing the dishes in their original traditional methods.

 

Particularly noteworthy were the Kinyarwanda dishes which added a unique touch to the festival transforming it into a cultural odyssey. Various preparation methods were employed, placing a significant emphasis on staple foods and other types of foods.

Among the delightful beverages, the traditional banana drink, Omubisi, flowed alongside freshly prepared fruit juices crafted from the farm's produce. As stomachs reached their capacity, attendees were treated to evening entertainment sessions. Festival-goers gathered around bonfires, immersing themselves in storytelling and enjoying performances by poets and singers.

The inaugural night featured a captivating performance by the legendary reggae singer Maddox Sematimba, who infused the atmosphere with reggae vibes. On the following night, singer and guitarist Aziz Azion took the stage with his powerful vocals and love melodies.

Evenings concluded with attendees either engrossed in lively conversations or engaged in board games like ludo before retreating to the tent camp for a restful night.

The festival, aimed at promoting agriculture while celebrating culture with a blend of entertainment, was organised collaboratively by Kaynela Farms, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, and the Avian Conservation Uganda Society.

Kaynela Farms, a sprawling 80-acre agricultural haven in Kayunga district, and houses diverse bird species and plants.
