Odoki said many Catholic couples are shying away from the sacrament of holy matrimony due to the need to have extravagant wedding ceremonies, urging that there is a need for couples to have wedding budgets that fit within their means.

The bishop ordinary of Arua Diocese, Rt Rev. Sabino Ocan, has said extravagance and polygamy are among the major factors delaying the quest for holy matrimony among the Catholics.

Bishop Odoki, installed in 2010, celebrated his 40th priestly anniversary on Saturday, October 28, in Arua City, a day before the celebrations.

Odoki said many Catholic couples are shying away from the sacrament of holy matrimony due to the need to have extravagant wedding ceremonies, urging that there is a need for couples to have wedding budgets that fit within their means.

He also blamed delayed weddings among married couples on polygamy among men.

“If your wedding is going to make you poor, that means you are deceiving yourself. Some people say we are still preparing and yet you are living together. Why are you living together? That means you can turn your living together into holy matrimony, so let us make our wedding simple and secondly, let us maintain the teachings of the church that emphasised one man, one woman,” advised Odoki.
