The former commander of special operations in the Uganda Police Force has been charged with the murder of the late Joan Kagezi.

Nickson Agasiirwe, formerly a Senior Superintendent of Police, was charged before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court.

Agasiirwe appeared before Chief Magistrate Esther Nyadoi on Monday, June 16, 2025, and was remanded to Luzira Prison until July 8, 2025, when the case is scheduled for mention.

He was not permitted to enter a plea, as the magistrate lacks jurisdiction over the matter.

It is alleged that on May 30 2015, at Kiwatule in Nakawa Division, Kampala, Agasiirwe, together with others still at large, with malice aforethought, caused the death of Kagezi, the former Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions.

The autopsy report indicated that she was shot twice, in the neck and shoulder, through the window on the driver’s side.

On 19 May this year, the International Crimes Division of the High Court sentenced Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) deserter Daniel Kisekka Kiwanuka to 35 years in prison for Kagezi’s murder, following a plea bargain he entered into with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Under a plea bargain, a suspect pleads guilty to charges in exchange for a lighter sentence.

The DPP, Jane Frances Abodo, dropped terrorism charges against Kisekka, and he was convicted solely of murder.

The former soldier has since been turned into a state witness, allegedly implicating Agasirwe and others in the killing.
