The National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has shut down an illegal abattoir and raw hide curing yard in Setta village, Kasangati town council in Wakiso district.

The environment watchdog accuses the abattoir of causing pollution due to poor waste disposal and persistent noxious emissions, endangering residents lives.

The facility was shut down on February 3, 2026, following a tip-off.

NEMA, in a statement, said the facility was found operating without authorisation and the poor waste disposal posed serious health risks.

“Three workers were arrested, and the landlord has been summoned for questioning,” NEMA said.

Article 39 of Uganda’s Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to a clean and healthy environment.

NEMA said they remained committed to protecting both the environment and public health.
