An election special police constable is nursing injuries at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital after he was stabbed by suspected street gangs during a night operation in Gulu city.

The victim, Samuel Oweka, 24, attached to Aywee Police post and a resident of Aywee cell in Laroo–Pece Division, was reportedly stabbed twice in the stomach on January 4, 2026, at Layibi Centre A and B.

The area was reportedly experiencing disturbances caused by suspected criminal gangs.

Information gathered by Radio Rupiny indicates that Oweka was among 20 special constables deployed alongside other security personnel to arrest the suspected criminals.

However, during the operation, the suspects scattered, and Oweka was stabbed by one of them while giving chase.

He was rushed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, where he underwent surgery and is currently receiving treatment.

Peter Banya, the Gulu deputy resident city commissioner in charge of Laroo–Pece Division, confirmed the incident, saying Oweka remains admitted and is responding well to treatment.

Esther Kisa, the Gulu East Division police commander, also confirmed the incident but noted that the area where it occurred is not under her jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, when contacted for comment, Aswa West Region police spokesperson David Mudong Ongom said he was not yet aware of the incident.
