Eight people were confirmed dead and seven others injured after a lorry crashed in Misana village along the Nsiika–Bukiirro road in Buhweju district.
The incident occurred on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at about 10:45 pm when the driver of a Fuso lorry, registration number UBA 649Z, reportedly lost control while descending a slope as he drove towards Rubindi. He remains at large.
Preliminary findings indicate that the victims were mobile traders heading to a monthly traders’ market.
“The driver lost control of the vehicle on a slope, and it crashed. Eight people died on the spot, and seven others got injured,” Apollo Tayebwa, the Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson said, adding that Police and other first responders rushed the injured to Nsiika Health Centre IV, where they are receiving treatment.
He identified the deceased as Justus Musinguzi, Jackson Turyagyenda, Kekimuli, and Kemigisha, all residents of Rubindi in Mbarara district. By press time, the other four male victims had not yet been identified.
The injured include Joab Babanza (45), Valentino Turyasingura (26), Amon Akampurira (31), Jovanis Kyarikunda (49), Yasin Kayongo (24), and Joan Katushabe (42). The four others in critical condition are yet to be named.
The bodies were taken to the same health facility’s mortuary for post-mortem examinations as investigations continue,” he said.
“Investigations are ongoing, but brake failure is the likely cause of the accident,” Tayebwa revealed.
“We appeal to anyone with information that can help us trace the driver to report to the nearest Police station. The information will be handled confidentially,” Tayebwa said.
