KAMPALA - Wednesday (May 27) has been declared a public holiday in Uganda for Muslims to celebrate Eid-al-Adha.
Uganda Media Centre executive director Alan Kasujja delivered the message from the public service ministry in a post on social media platform X on Tuesday.
On the eve of the holiday, Muslims have observed the day of Arafat, considered the holiest day in Islam.
It is the peak of the Hajj pilgrimage when millions of Muslims gather at Mount Arafat to pray and seek repentance.
In a statement on Monday, Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) said the Eid-al-Adha national prayer will be led by Sheikh Dr Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda.
This prayer will be held the UMSC National Mosque in Old Kampala starting at 9am, Prof. Dr. Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga, the director of sharia, said.
Prayers are expected to also be held in other parts of Kampala and across the country.
Also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, Eid-al-Adha is one of the most significant holidays in the Islamic calendar.
It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's unwavering faith and his willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, before God provided a ram as a substitute.
