President Yoweri Museveni and other East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders held a virtual summit on Monday, March 24, to discuss the security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Co-chaired by Kenyan President William Ruto and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the meeting reviewed resolutions from previous summits and the African Union (AU) and the UN Security Council.

The leaders recalled key decisions from the 1st Joint EAC-SADC Summit on 8th February 2025 in Dar es Salaam, the 1261st AU Peace and Security Council meeting on February 14, 2025, and UN Security Council Resolution 2773 on February 21, 2025, all stressing the need for joint action to address eastern DRC’s security crisis.

The summit also adopted the report from the EAC-SADC ministerial meeting on 17th March in Harare, which included recommendations from defence chiefs and a roadmap outlining immediate, medium, and long-term measures for sustainable peace.

The summit commended the EAC and SADC secretariats for their preparatory efforts.
