Lands minister Judith Nabakooba has urged youth in Busunjju county, Mityana district to draw inspiration from the Uganda Cranes, which is currently participating in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and has since advanced to the quarterfinals with a draw with South Africa.
She urged the youth to actively participate in local football tournaments, through which they can improve their talents and get bigger opportunities at national and international levels.
Nabakooba made the call on August 15, 2025, while opening the Kambaala Christmas Tournament, football competitions among youth hailing from Busunjju county.
The opening match at Kambaala playground saw Team Nabakooba Lubajja FC beat Kambaala Football Club 1-0.
“You are well aware of the ongoing CHAN 2025 at Namboole stadium, you could be the next to be playing in the Uganda Cranes team. So, let’s not take this lightly,” she said, noting that many players in Busunjju County FC went through the same process.
The minister promised to continue supporting the tournament and youth in the area to transform their lives.
The Kambaala Christmas Tournament idea was conceived by David Kibuuka, captain of Team Nabakooba Lubajja FC, who announced that a total of 12 teams would participate.
He said champions will walk away with a bull and a trophy.
“The second team will receive a goat and medals. This is to motivate them because we have many talents in the area, but they don't get a chance to exhibit them,” Kibuuka said.
Finals are expected to be held on Christmas Day and will be officiated by Nabakooba as the chief guest.
Football teams that registered to participate in this tournament include Kasota FC, Kambaala, Maanyi, Banda, Buzibazi, Mawanga, and Team Nabakooba Lubajja.
Others are Bulabakulu, Kimuli and Kivuuvu, among others.
Kibuuka said they also expect to award the best player. A team pays sh100,000 registration fees to participate in these competitions.
