'Crucial journey' for Muntu and ANT

Also scheduled for nomination today is Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), which unveiled their flagbearer's official campaign poster.

The poster is a reflection of "our values, vision, and commitment to deliver the change Uganda can trust", said the opposition party that is embarking on a "crucial journey together".

Before setting off from his residence in Magere, National Unity Platform's (NUP) Robert Kyagulanyi and wife Barbie paused for a moment of prayer led by Pastor Muto. They were to head to the NUP head office at Makerere Kavule in Kampala and later to the Electoral Commission head office in Lubowa, Wakiso district for Kyagulanyi's presidential nomination.

Kyagulanyi, also known by his music stage name Bobi Wine, is seeking to become a two-time presidential candidate, having contested in the 2021 race and came up second behind NRM's Yoweri Museveni (who has been cleared to run again in 2026).

FDC supporters buoyed by Mafabi nomination

FDC supporters are now setting off from their party headquarters at Najjanankumbi and heading to Lweza to join their presidential candidate, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, who has been duly nominated by the Electoral Commission to contest for Uganda's presidency in 2026. From Lweza, Mafabi and his supporters will proceed to Nakawa for a public rally at Kampala Road Playground, Butabika Parish Nakawa.

Mafabi's campaign slogan is: 'Fixing the economy, money in our pockets'.

Mafabi seeks EC nod

Nathan Nandala Mafabi was entrusted with the FDC flag for the 2026 presidential election in July this year. Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the current FDC president, had initially thrown his hat into the ring but then pulled out of the party presidential race.

Amuriat (left in the picture below) is at the EC head office today in a public show of his support for his party's frontrunner.

Under the waiting tent, he appears in good spirits as he and his agent ensure everything is in order before facing the Electoral Commission team.

ICYMI: Mabirizi bounces back, Kasibante cleared

After incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (NRM) was nominated early Tuesday morning, two more candidates were scheduled for the day’s nomination exercise: Joseph Mabirizi of the Conservative Party (CP) and Robert Kasibante of the National Peasants Party (NPP).

However, after a thorough perusal by Electoral Commission (EC) officials, Mabirizi's papers were rejected and he was advised to seek verification from the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE).

Shortly after, the next aspirant, Kasibante, arrived with his team and proceeded to their tent. His documents were scrutinised page by page and, unlike Mabirizi, they were found in order.

Arrested for defacing campaign posters

Police on Tuesday (September 23) said they had arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly defacing President Yoweri Museveni's campaign posters. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) leader was the first candidate to be nominated by the Electoral Commission to run for president in 2026.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said Isaac Nsubuga, a resident of Lubya parish, Rubaga Division in Kampala, was arrested by Old Kampala Police officers.

“A video clip trending on social media on September 22, 2025, showed the suspect defacing the posters. Police analysed the video, identified the suspect, and dispatched a team to apprehend him. Nsubuga was arrested, and some of the defaced posters were recovered from him. Residents reported that he had promised to remove all the President's posters from the village, which were indeed found plucked off the walls,” said Onyango.

He said the suspects will be charged under Section 80 of the Presidential Elections Act.

Security guidelines during nomination

With the presidential nomination exercise entering its second and final day, security agencies have urged all political actors and public to take note of the following:

▪️ Access to the venue is limited to invited persons and aspirants only
▪️ Use of routes leading to the venue will be restricted in line with traffic guidelines and protocols issued
▪️ We will enforce the Electoral Commission regulation that a candidate’s convoy must have no more than two motor vehicles, each carrying no more than 10 occupants
▪️ The incumbent President, if a candidate, may use the official number of vehicles attached to the office
▪️ Processions to and from the nomination venue are prohibited
▪️ Security vehicles for presidential candidates will carry only government security personnel assigned to them
▪️ Nominees must cooperate with their security details for protection

▪️ We will not tolerate any usurpation of security duties such as traffic or crowd control
▪️ The use of rowdy groups (“Egaali”), hooliganism, intimidation of opponents and provocation of security officers are strictly prohibited
▪️ Bringing any dangerous weapons to the venue is strictly prohibited
▪️ We remind the public that election laws, public order, and criminal laws continue to be fully enforced
▪️ The rights of citizens and peace must not be disrupted by nomination activities and associated rallies
▪️ Any concerns or disputes with security officers can be addressed through established mechanisms
▪️ We call on all Ugandans to promote peace and act as ambassadors of harmony during this time

What next after nominations?

Thursday, which is the day after the conclusion of the nomination exercise, will see the start of the harmonization of presidential candidates' campaign programmes. This will be a three-day exercise, starting on Thursday (September 25) and ending on Saturday (September 27).

Thereafter, the presidential candidates will begin their respective campaigns: from September 29 until January 12 next year — in accordance with Section 22(1) of the Presidential Elections Act.

Nomination programme

The Electoral Commission said its programme is designed to facilitate "swift conduct" of the nomination exercise, given that the bulk of the nomination documents (lists of supporters) have been verified in advance.

Importantly, aspiring candidates will be required to be physically present, and to submit all additional requisite documents for verification. The Commission will, after scrutiny, and satisfaction that the requirements have been fulfilled, declare the aspirant duly nominated.

The nominated candidate will briefly address the public through the media at the Media Centre set up at the nomination venue.

Accessing nomination venue

So who will be granted access to the nomination venue today, and how will they access it?

According to EC boss Byabakama, only individuals who have been invited and accredited to participate in or observe the nomination exercise will be granted access to the nomination venue.

An aspirant will be allowed into the nomination venue accompanied by no more than 20 people (including the aspirant themselves).

By the time an aspirant arrives for their nomination either today or on day two, they will have submitted their accompanying particulars to the Electoral Commission in advance.

An aspirant will use only two vehicles for purposes of their nomination. Each vehicle should not carry more than 10 people, driver inclusive. Each of the vehicles will bear a Police sticker.

The Electoral Commission has "strongly warned" aspirants against mobilizing supporters to accompany them to and from the nomination venue, "as processions are not permitted" during the nomination exercise.

After being successfully nominated, candidates who wish to meet with their supporters to launch their manifestos are advised to organize and conduct such meetings in full compliance with traffic regulations and laws governing public assemblies.

What you need to be nominated

To begin with, an aspirant seeking presidential nomination must be a citizen of Uganda by birth, who is aged 18 or above and is a registered voter.

They are required to submit certified copies of educational qualifications confirming that they obtained a minimum formal education of Advanced (A) Level or its equivalent.

The aspirant's nomination must be supported by no fewer than 100 persons who are registered voters, from not less than 98 districts (which form two-thirds of all the districts/cities of Uganda).

Aspirants have been guided to carry along a proposed campaign schedule with the starting date of  September 29, 2025 "to facilitate smooth harmonization after the nomination exercise".

Hello everyone. We are back for the second — and last day — of nomination of candidates for Uganda's 2026 presidential election.  Following Tuesday's exercise, we already know the three names that will be on the ballot paper following the successful nomination of the National Resistance Movement's Yoweri Museveni, Conservative Party's Elton Joseph Mabirizi and National Peasants Party's Robert Kasibante (pictured below in that order).

What does have in store for us? We shall wait to find out.
