In a determined move to restore calm and public safety, police in Lira City West Division have arrested 44 youths suspected of involvement in a spate of robberies and thefts that have plagued communities in recent weeks.

The intelligence-led operation, conducted on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at around 10:00am, targeted hotspots in Anai, Ober Cell, Te-Kulu, and Anai Okii Cell. It was a joint effort by the police and local leaders, including LC1 officials and area councillors, under the command of SP Edatu, the Division Police Commander.

According to Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, the operation netted 44 suspects, including four women.

The group are accused of theft and robbery.

Exhibits recovered from some suspects include opium and metallic objects, which police suspect to be used during robberies.

Following a public screening process conducted in the presence of local leaders, 17 suspects were cleared and released. However, 27 were formally charged with unlawful possession of opium and housebreaking implements.

“We extend our appreciation to the local leadership and community members for their continued cooperation,” said Okema. “This operation is part of a broader effort to rid Lira of criminal elements. Just last week, 32 suspects were taken to court and remanded over similar offences.”

The operation marks the second major sweep in just two weeks, highlighting a renewed police focus on restoring law and order in Lira City.
