The Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) secured their first win in the ongoing CDF Soccer Cup against Armored (2-1) in a tournament played at different playgrounds including Ntare 1, Ntare In and Umoja in Mbarara City. 

Ssengonzi Danis scored the first goal in 21 minutes securing an equaliser from Armored who had taken an early lead. Mousa Kigenyi netted the winning goal in the 90-minute giving them the first win in the group stage. 

According to the table, CMI is in the 4th division in Group D with 3 points. 1DVID tops group A with 7 points in a tie with MP who also have 7 points but with a goal difference of 3. In group B, UPDAF tops the table with 9 points with MAGA X2 in second position. 

 

FAD leads Group C with 5 points while E/BDE tops Group D with 7 points. In netball, 1DIV defeated General Headquarters 21-59 goals, and MTN defeated Armored 33-30 goals in matches played yesterday. The 15th edition of the CDF soccer kicked off on Sunday. 

The tournament which is now in group stages attracted 19 football teams and 12 netball teams. CDF Soccer Cup was launched in 1988 during the time of Gen.Salim Saleh as a commander. This is the 15th edition of the tournament. The 14th edition was held in Fort Portal hosted at Buhinga Stadium. In his opening remarks, Brig Gen Paul Muhanguzi, the second division commander who represented CDF emphasized discipline as a core principle that will lead to a successful tournament. 

He told them that their games should send a message to supporters to show that UPDF doesn’t only know how to shoot guns but is good in other fields including sports. Col.John Mark Ssemanda, the director of sports UPDF said every year the tournament is hosted in different areas. He said the tournament is meant to earmark talent and help soldiers to practice their skills in sports and to show the general public that UPDF participates in different activities other than holding a gun.

Healthwise they are mindful to help the community to fight against different diseases. They are looking at cohesion in UPDF by bringing all the formations together. He said at the end of the tournament several awards including bulls will be given to the winning teams. The event is sponsored by Wazalendo SACCO.
