Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has defended representing Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba at events. According to Tayebwa, given a chance to lead Uganda, Muhoozi would take it to another level.
Tayebwa, who is also the Ruhinda North County MP in Mitooma district, made the remarks on social media platform X on May 10, 2026.
He was reacting to comments made by veteran journalist Timothy Kalyegira about his (Tayebwa) recent participation in the CDF’s 52nd birthday run for charity and hope.
In the write-up published in the Daily Monitor, Kalyegira took issue with Tayebwa on representing the CDF as chief runner at the event, which took place at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala on April 26.
"In no country in the world, except Uganda, would the deputy Speaker of the national assembly represent the head of the army at a charity run organised by the political organisation that this CDF heads," Kalyegira wrote.
The event was organised by the Patriotic League of Uganda, a civic organisation under Gen. Muhoozi’s leadership.
Tayebwa told the veteran journalist that he was not someone obsessed with titles but rather with one’s contribution.
“I’m proud to have stood in for someone I admire and believe, someone who sacrifices more than anyone of us to have a peaceful and secure country,” the Deputy Speaker stated.
“But above all, someone I call a friend and brother, whom I believe, once given an opportunity, would take our beautiful country to another level,” he added.
A few hours after the run had ended, Muhoozi, also known simply by his initials MK, took to X and thanked everybody who supported in whichever way to the success of the event.
“You are all the best Ugandans we have. Thank you so much for contributing to the betterment of less fortunate citizens. I will announce how much we raised and what charity we shall support. God bless you all. Muraregye (good night).”
He later announced that they had raised over one billion Uganda shillings during the birthday run. Part of the money will go to Uganda Child Cancer Foundation that is fundraising to build a hostel, he said in another post.
