Effective justice delivery requires high-quality lawyers, the Deputy Chief Justice, Richard Buteera, has observed.

In a meeting with the Law Development Center (LDC) management at the Court of Appeal on Monday February 12, 2024 in Kampala, Buteera emphasized the need of maintaining high-quality lawyers from LDC to ensure effective justice delivery.

The LDC is the only institution in Uganda that offers the Bar Course leading to the award of the post-graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

The purpose of the visit was to brief him on the upcoming 51st LDC graduation ceremony scheduled for April 19, 2024.

The team included Sylvester Wambuga (LDC Assistant Director-Kampala Campus), Annette Karungi Mutabingwa (Head Bar Course), Precious Ngabirano (Head Law and Continuing Legal Education), and Macky Robert (Coordinator LDC Alumni).

Wambuga updated the DCJ on LDC's programmes and innovations, including the establishment of a fourth campus in Mbale City.

He also informed the Deputy Chief Justice that LDC has incorporated in its curriculum a course unit on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in line with the Judiciary Transformation Agenda.

He commended the inclusion of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) education on the LDC curriculum, particularly citing the success of plea bargains in Criminal Justice.

Stressing the shortage of trained arbitrators, the Deputy Chief Justice highlighted the necessity of competent arbitrators to settle disputes beyond judicial adjudication.

He also emphasized the role of competent arbitrators in settling disputes, acknowledging that people often need assistance in resolving conflicts.

Mutabingwa affirmed LDC's commitment to providing necessary resources for ADR education, identifying skilled practitioners, and prioritizing continuous training in ADR, depending on the availability of funds.
