In a rather bold move, unknown suspects broke into Bank of Uganda Head Office premises at Plot 45, Kampala Road—the shorter tower near City Square, on the wee hours of Monday, May 4, 2026, and stole seven laptops, New Vision Online has learnt.
Sources at the Bank on Monday confirmed the laptops were stolen from the offices of the commercial liaison officers, which are located in the basement of the building.

“Yes, we had a break-in and seven laptops were stolen,” a source from the bank told New Vision Online.
Police and sister security agencies, including the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces, Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS), Internal Security Organisation (ISO), visited the scene on Monday morning, and items of evidential value were picked.
A police sniffer dog was introduced to the scene of the crime, and it led the Police to three buildings downtown where the suspected stolen items were allegedly kept.
On Monday morning, there was a heavy Police and military deployment at Kalungi Plaza, Kirumira Towers and Mutaasa Kafeero buildings in Kampala and a search for the stolen items was conducted.
Security personnel sealed off the premises in an operation that took almost eight hours. Those found inside the building were not allowed to move out, and no one was allowed to enter the building. Several suspects accused of dealing in stolen mobile phones were arrested during the crackdown.
Central bank says incident is being investigated
In a statement issued this May 4, 2026, evening, the central banks acknowledged the break-in, which it said was detected this morning.
Suspects apprehended during a joint security operation as several arcades were raided in search of laptops and other items stolen from the Bank of Uganda (BOU) building on Plot 45, Kampala Road. This was on Monday, May 4, 2026. 
"The matter is currently under investigation, and the BoU is working closely with the relevant security agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and to take appropriate action".
The bank assured the public that its core operations and services remain fully functional and have not been disrupted by this incident.
