The 12.17km Bukasa–Sentema–Kakiri road upgrade in Wakiso district has reached approximately 80% completion as of March 2026, project manager Joe Wong has confirmed.

“The works are being executed in line with the contract specifications,” Wong said, responding to public concerns about the quality of construction.

The project, implemented by China Communications Construction Company, is part of government efforts to improve transport links within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area. Construction began on August 8, 2025 and is scheduled to run for 18 months, with completion expected in May 2026.

Engineers involved in the works say the current phase focuses primarily on drainage installation and earthworks, which are crucial steps in stabilising the road foundation before surfacing begins.

Wong explained that drainage systems are being constructed along the road embankments to manage stormwater and prevent future damage to the road.

Once completed, the Bukasa–Sentema–Kakiri Road is expected to significantly ease traffic movement within Wakiso district and improve connectivity between the rapidly expanding urban communities surrounding Kampala.

The corridor links several key trading centres and residential zones, many of which have experienced rapid population growth as the city expands.

Improved road infrastructure is also expected to support local businesses, facilitate smoother commutes for residents and reduce travel times between Wakiso and Kampala.

Government officials have emphasised that contractors must adhere strictly to quality standards to ensure durability and value for public funds. Recent remarks by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja highlighted growing public concern about the quality of road works in some areas.

However, CCCC maintains that the Bukasa–Sentema–Kakiri project is progressing within the required technical standards and timelines.

“We remain committed to delivering the project in accordance with the agreed specifications,” Wong assured.

As the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area continues to grow, such infrastructure upgrades are seen as vital for reducing congestion, supporting economic activity and improving the daily lives of commuters and residents.
