At least one person has died following clashes between people reportedly from the Kuku tribe in neigbouring South Sudan and the Aringa and Madi groups in Uganda over a disputed border area.

The development was revealed by Gore Goffin, the resident district commissioner of Moyo district in Northern.

He said the deceased female was unidentified and from the Kuku tribe.

She is said to have been in the company of other people from her tribe, who reportedly moved into the Ugandan side of the contested border area.

This was on Wednesday, according to Goffin.

He said when the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) was notified, they responded swiftly and faced off with the invading group and exchanging gunfire.

The woman was killed during the exchange. One man was arrested.

Goffin said the body of the woman was handed over to the government of South Sudan while arrangements were underway to also hand over the arrested man.

The situation calmed down, but the RDC warned Ugandans against moving to the disputed areas, saying "It is not yet safe for our people to go back".

Goffin said plans are underway to restore peace in the area and provide basic support to those affected, with the UPDF continuing to monitor the situation.

The border tension is leaving its mark.

Over 100 houses have reportedly been burnt along with some worship places after a group alleged to be from Kajokeji in South Sudan attacked residents in Moyo and Yumbe districts along the borders, RDC Goffin said.

The most affected areas are Gwere north parish, Lefori sub-county in Moyo district and Feyo village in Kochi sub-county in Yumbe district.

The first attack was reported on Monday this week.
