The body of a 42-year-old fisherman from Obari Cell, Kamdini town council in Oyam District, has been retrieved after several days of searching.
The deceased, identified as Patrick Otim, reportedly went fishing on Tochi Stream two weeks ago but did not return home, prompting a community-led search effort.
The chairperson of Obari Cell, Benson Oryema, said the community searched for Otim’s body for two weeks and three days before it was discovered on Wednesday, 17 2025, at around 4:00 pm, approximately three kilometres from where he went missing.
The body was found trapped underwater, with severe injuries, including bite wounds that broke the victim’s neck, hands, and back.
Oryema confirmed that the incident occurred on November 30, 2025, when Otim was allegedly attacked by a suspected hippopotamus.
According to Oryema, Otim had gone fishing with a colleague, whose particulars could not be established by press time.
The colleague reported that Otim was attacked by a hippopotamus while fishing in a locally made boat.
Oryema added that residents living along Tochi Stream continue to live in fear due to the frequent presence of dangerous wildlife, particularly hippopotamuses and crocodiles.
