Police in Iganga, under the Busoga East region, are hunting for a speeding taxi driver who reportedly knocked dead a boda boda rider and fled the scene.

The fatal crash occurred on June 21, 2025, at around 6:00 pm in Busei, near Sana Country Hotel in Iganga, along the Iganga–Bugiri highway.

According to Busoga East police spokesperson Michael Kafayo, the taxi driver was attempting to overtake a trailer at a known black spot when he swerved and collided with an oncoming motorcyclist, killing him instantly.

"The driver, operating a silver Toyota Hiace taxi with registration number UA 551AK, was heading towards Bugiri at high speed. While trying to overtake an unidentified trailer, he veered off the road and knocked the oncoming cyclist," said Kafayo.

The victim, who was riding a motorcycle with registration number UEM 950E from Bugiri towards Iganga, is yet to be identified.

Kafayo confirmed that the taxi driver fled the scene immediately after the crash and remains at large. Police visited the scene shortly after the incident, retrieved the body and transferred it to Iganga Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.

Relatives of the deceased are yet to come forward. Both the taxi and the motorcycle were towed to Iganga Central Police Station for inspection as investigations into the matter continue.
