Every manufacturer should, therefore, put the health of the consumers at the forefront or else they should not produce products that are consumed by people,” Arorwa said.

KAMPALA - Manufacturers of beverage products have been instructed to always ensure proper hygiene and sanitary conditions to avoid being closed down by the law enforcement agents, especially from the Uganda National Bureau of Standards.

The call was made by Daniel Arorwa, the Surveillance Manager at Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) during a recent interaction between the UNBS and the Uganda Alcohol Industry Association.

Arorwa was responding to a complaint that was raised by the members of the Kombucha producers Association accusing the UNBS standards enforcement team of closing their members’ premises due to what he called "a simple failure in their production processes."

“We close and shall continue closing factories that we find in poor hygiene conditions that put the lives of the consumers at risk.

Every manufacturer should, therefore, put the health of the consumers at the forefront or else they should not produce products that are consumed by people,” he said.

He further asked the proprietors of the beverage-producing companies to employ professionals in their production so as to produce products of the required standards.

“Do not employ a person because he or she is your friend or relative. If you are to employ them first make sure they get the required training for the product they are involved in,” he advised.

Arorwa added that UNBS is mandated to ensure health and safety of the consumers and therefore cannot sit back and leave people to consume products that are not to the required standards.
