Kampala Catholic Archbishop Paul Ssemwogere has condemned the acts of violence that have emerged as the election season draws nearer. He has also rebuked opposition politicians who exhibit harsh rhetoric and urged all sides to exercise restraint.

Speaking at the 28th anniversary of Kasana Luwero Catholic Diocese over the weekend, Ssemwogere, condemned the use of hate speech by aspirants and the torture of opposition supporters by state agents, whom he said used excessive force during the Kawempe North Parliamentary seat byelection last week.

"The practice of beating people who are trying to get nominated is uncouth. Why beat someone or smear him/her just because you want to stand alone," Ssemwogere said on March 2, 2025.

Last week, an incident during which security personnel clashed with National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters in Kawempe North, saw several supporters and a journalist injured.

Ssemwogere said electoral politics becomes meaningless if some people cannot stand being challenged.

Ssemwogere urged the Christians to use the Lent season to rethink their actions so as to have a peaceful Uganda. He also asked the media to denounce acts of state violence so that those responsible can reform.

The Archbishop paid tribute to the late Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, the pioneer bishop of Kasana Luwero, for having laid a good foundation for the diocese.

Semwogerere said the good foundation had made it possible for the diocese to achieve its set goals in terms of development, having more married people, raising education levels and attracting more youths to the church.

He advised the youth to exploit their talents and work hard instead of pinning their hopes on handouts.

Higher education state minister John Muyingo advised Christians to participate in the various government anti-poverty programmes like the Parish Development Model, to boost their household incomes.

Luweero Anglican Bishop Wilson Kisekka hailed the good working relations with the Kasana Luwero Catholic diocese.

Kasana Luweero Catholic Diocese, which comprises the districts of Luwero, Nakaseke and Nakasongola, was created in 1997.
